Ross Transport has well and truly made its mark on the trucking industry over the past 40 years, overcoming adversity early on to become the largest owner operator fleet in Wollongong, NSW.
Frances, Alan and True Ross have grown their family business from a single truck to a 57-strong fleet, carrying mainly steel, with a few tippers and dogs thrown in the mix.
And just as the faces behind the business have remained constant, so has its tyre provider.
Ross Transport has been a Bridgestone partner for the best part of four decades, and is currently running 864 Bandag retreads on any given day.
“We’ve been working with the Bandag product for about 10 years and it just keeps getting better and better. It’s unbelievable,” Alan said.
“The wear we are getting out of Bandag is better than some new tyres and the failure rate is next to nothing. In fact, I can’t recall the last time we made a claim. If they do fail it’s due to driver error, never tyre quality.”
“Put it this way, we had to double check the figures from the last few months because they were too good. It blew us away.”
The Ross Transport team are also running Bridgestone’s Ecopia low rolling resistance tyres which, much to Alan’s surprise, is saving them fuel.
“I was sceptical in the beginning, but they truly are a fuel saving tyre. Even my drivers tell me they can feel them rolling off the hills much better,” Alan said.
“They work really well and they’ve delivered financial benefits. If you ask me, that’s all positive.”
Because the Ecopia’s low rolling resistance technology is in its casing, Alan is able to further harness their fuel saving abilities by retreading them with Bandag low rolling resistance treads.
Product aside, Alan said the main reason Ross Transport remained loyal to Bridgestone was simple. “Bridgestone are leading the way in service. Their tyre fitters are trained properly, their trucks are well equipped, the product is good, and we have access to service in all areas of the country,” he said.
“They make sure no mistakes are made when it comes to putting tyres on my truck. They can tell me where any particular tyre was, on which day, and who changed it, get back to me straight away and have always been willing to tailor their services to suit us.”

Retreading is a highly practical and efficient form of recycling. Retreading makes it possible to re-use worn tyres. Instead of dumping tyres with worn out tread and good sidewalls, they can be rebuilt and put back to work again, and again.

Protecting our environment for future generations is also important to the employees of Bandag. Not only is the retreading process environmentally friendly but Bandag Manufacturing Pty Ltd is accredited to ISO 14001.
Tyre dumps are a major source of pollution. Not only are they an eye- sore, they attract vermin, hold water, create a breeding ground for mosquitoes and, most dangerously, are highly combustible, releasing toxic fumes and dense smoke into the atmosphere when ignited.
With retreading, tyres stay on the road longer so fewer tyres pile up in landfill dumps.
Studies conducted in the USA show that it takes around 80 litres of crude oil to produce one new truck tyre. With more than one million new truck tyres sold every year in Australia, that’s over 80 million litres of crude oil annually.
On the positive side, to retread a worn truck tyre takes only one fifth of the oil required to produce a new tyre. With approximately one million truck retreads produced annually in Australia, retreads are already helping to save around 60 million litres of oil every year.
Bandag’s unique, advanced Cold Process Retreading technique uses less energy to create a product with a wear performance similar to that of a new tyre.
Whereas some retreads use a hot cap process with temperatures as high as 160 degrees Celsius to cure retreads, Bandag’s specially developed process uses a low 99 degrees to bond the tread to the case.
Depending on its quality and condition, a well constructed truck or bus tyre, can be retreaded 2, 3 or more times, and only one worn tyre casing requires disposal instead of many.
