Busting some common myths about retreads.
Today’s retread is a new breed, helping savvy business owners get new tyre performance at a fraction of the price. So let us bust a few myths about retreads and show you why retreads make good business sense.
Myth: They’re mileage munchers.
Fact: A quality retread delivers mileage comparable and sometimes even better than new tyres.
Just as new tyre mileage varies widely, so does retread mileage. The reason is due to a complex mix of tread compounding, tread weight, tread design and casing structure.
Myth: They’re not safe.
Fact: Here’s a testament to safety: nearly every major airline trusts retreads.
Today’s sophisticated retreads are nothing like their predecessors. In fact, they’re so safe, school bus fleets in the US rely on them. Even fighter jet pilots count on them. And you can imagine the stress jet tyres undergo during takeoffs and landings.
Myth: They’re not available for my vehicle.
Fact: Retreads can be produced for just about any heavy vehicle application.
Because retreads are available in a huge range of sizes, widths, tread patterns and tread depths, chances are there’s a retread to suit no matter what kind of vehicles you use.
Myth: Worn out tread, worn out casing.
Fact: A casing can still be good long after your tread wears.
A tyre casing doesn’t wear out like a tread does. So with proper maintenance you can expect to get multiple lives out of a quality casing. The key is using a quality casing, like Bridgestone.
Myth: Heat kills ’em.
Fact: The notion that retread bonds will fail on hot days is just an old wives’ tale.
Sure, heat can ruin any tyre, new or not. Few would argue that. But in most cases that heat is due to under‑inflation. That’s why proper inflation is so important, no matter what kind of tyre you’re running.
Myth: Retreads litter our roads.
Fact: That rubber on the road with all the wire? Unlikely to be a Bandag retread.
Look close and see for yourself. Virtually all that scrap rubber contains wire. Casing wire. The fact is, there’s no wire in the rubber retreaders use. And Bandag’s state of the art shearography machines ensure that any casing defects are found and only suitable casings are retreaded.
Myth: They just don’t perform.
Fact: Try telling that to the top competitors at major on-track and off-road races.
High-quality retreads have taken all the punishment that professional off-road races could dish out. They’ve also run gruelling 24 hour races and even cruised to over 240 kph on a heavy truck at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the US.
Myth: They fall apart.
Fact: The bond securing the retread to the casing is extremely strong.
In fact it is so strong that it is more likely that the rubber around the bond will tear before the bond would break.
